Asbestos-a New Hazard
نویسنده
چکیده
In recent years there has been an increase in the incidence of a rare malignant tumour—mesothelioma— affecting the lining of the lung or abdominal organs. The evidence points to a relationship between the occurrence of this tumour and exposure to asbestos, and in some cases the exposure need only be slight both in intensity and in duration. This means that not only the manufacturing, but also the user industries may be at risk, and new legislation will shortly be introduced with the aim of eliminating the hazard. This must ensure that the worker is fully protected but care must be taken not to introduce too fussy restrictions which would hamper industry without adding to safety.

Asbestos Presence in a Factory that Produced Asbestos-Containing Products
In 2007, research was carried out to determine the type and amount of asbestos fibers in a Croatian factory with a long history of making asbestos-containing products.Since the 1970s, asbestos fibres have been considered carcinogenic in humans i.e as a known cancer-causing agent. In the environment, asbestos fibres are inactive and naturally resist biodegradation. In time, fibres can only be gr...

PURPOSE Long-term follow-up studies of asbestos-related cancer in shipbreaking workers are lacking. This study examines the relationship between cancer incidence and asbestos exposure among former Taiwan shipbreaking workers. METHODS A total of 4,427 shipbreaking workers and 22,135 population-based matched controls were successfully followed in this study. The study cohort was linked to the T...

A Framework that Incorporates Repeated Measurements into the Hazard (Under the direction of Michael J. Symons). By allowing covariates to remain constant between consecutive measurements over time. the hazard is able to incorporate repeated measurements in addition to intervening event and baseline information. Within this context. proportionality receives a broader definition. Although an indi...
متن کاملHistory of asbestos related disease.
The first medical article on the hazards of asbestos dust appeared in the British Medical Journal in 1924. Following inquiries by Edward Merewether and Charles Price, the British government introduced regulations to control dangerous dust emissions in UK asbestos factories. Until the 1960s these appeared to have addressed the problem effectively. Only then, with the discoveries that mesotheliom...
متن کاملNanoparticles, human health hazard and regulation.
New developments in technology usually entail some hazard as well as advantage to a society. Hazard of a material translates into risk by exposure of humans and/or their environment to the agent in question, and risk is reduced by control of exposure, usually guided by regulation based on understanding of the mechanisms of harm. We illustrate risks relating to the causation of diseases associat...
